  • Unusual RosesThere are many very pretty roses out there, and some are even stunning to say the least. What about something different? I have heard and been hearing for a number of years about blue roses being developed. Not tinted or sprayed blue, but really blue roses. Whoa now that is different and cool. In the beginning of this journey I remember reading a magazine article about this ongoing more >>

  • What is a hydroponic rose?Hydroponic roses are roses grown in a solution rather than soil. Nutrients are easier to uptake by the root system through a solution rather than soil. In other words, this is a more efficient system. This is more cost prohibitive, because of water pumps, fertilizer, lights and so on.Are the roses nicer? Probably because there is more control in how they are grown versus more >>

  • What makes some roses so much bigger than others?A lot of things play into that. Sunlight, temperatures, moisture, fertilizer and so on. One of the biggest things is the age of the plant. We have a rose bush in our yard that is many years old. I am guessing 30 years or better. Every spring it produces tons of roses. For the type of rose, they are pretty big. However, if we would prune them and more >>

  • Is the rose the most popular flower?Close I bet. In our 18 + years of being a florist, it seems that the rose is what most people asked for by name. Think about it. • Roses in movies?Have you ever noticed how many roses or flower arrangements or florists you see in movies? I never used to notice, but in many movies and I do mean many you see a florist shop in the background. Bed of roses, roses at funerals, buying roses from the street vendor, scenes in New York of corner floral shops. Now you are thinking, wow it's true that is weird.I don't think we more >>

  • Should you only send roses when someone is sick or a birthday?NO!! Any day is great to send roses. In fact when people least expect it is the best time to send roses. In fact you could send a bright spring mixed color rose bouquet now. I always enjoyed seeing the smiles on peoples faces when we delivered roses to then. I felt as much joy as they did thinking that I helped them celebrate whatever more >>

  • My red roses are not really red. That is probably a ture statement. Most red roses are really not red. Roses vary greatly in their coloration. Anything from red to deep red or maroon to burgundy. If you want red you will have to check with your local florist to find what variety they can get in the true red coloration. I would start with Rose Bagier, then Visa, Madame delBard, Charlotte and so more >>

  • Today marks an ominous anniversary for me.It has been exactly one year since my Mother's passing. I received a single rose today in remembrance of her. It was a lovely gift and I felt honored that someone else remembered me and her. I was taken aback that someone actually bought me a flower, in particular a red rose.Considering that a single red rose embodies love, I felt that it was very special more >>

  • Should I buy roses on the internet or from a local florist?Personally if something goes wrong i love the idea of being able to go look someone in the eye and explain my problem to a person face to face. Squeaky wheels get the grease right? It is easier for people on the phone in another state to say no, or to be rude than someone looking you in the face, especially if you have the "look" in your more >>

  • How important are flowers in reality?Yesterday we attended a funeral. She was my Brother-in-laws Mom-in-law, and my Mom's friend. Such a sad occasion to have to witness. Many colors and styles. It seems over the years people order stuff to convey feelings of sympathy and to comfort families at times of great sorrow such as this. I can tell you more >>

  • Why do my roses not have a lot of fragrance?Sometimes roses just have less fragrance. True. What causes this. Hybridizing.Trying to make a certain quality in a rose by tissue culturing can give longer lasting, and bigger roses, but can also cause some of the fragrance to be lost.If you notice Grandma's rose garden has lots more fragrance than most cut roses.Natural fragrance via nature. Although more >>

  • What can i do to make my roses last longer?First and foremost you need to start with very fresh roses. Second they need to be in a true floral preservative solution. We always reccomend Floralife preservative. Most any florist will have some kind of floral preservative and not mind selling extra or give you some with your rose purchase.I strictly follow the label directions to achieve maximum more >>

  • Roses can freeze so be careful. This time of year fresh cut roses can freeze. Now I hear a lot of "duh's" out there, but it is surprising how many time people don't think about it. The colder it is, the quicker flowers will freeze. We store flowers at around 33-35 degrees in our refrigerators on purpose, Just cold enough for them to not freeze. What do we do about this when delivering? One, you can more >>

  • Is it ok to buy roses for a guy?Well of course. Lots of guys like flowers too. Although you would probably be safer with going for a smaller quantity like a single rose. He may act like it is silly, but I know he will be happy to receive such a lovely gift.A single red rose is the universal symbol for love. He might prefer you give the rose to him at home and not in front of his buddies though. more >>

  • Is it bad to send or buy artificial flowers instead of fresh flowers? No! They last practically forever and can be purchased in just about any price range or color and style. For a lot of homes artificial or "silk" flowers are great. Oh dear, maybe you could find her some artificial flowers. There are some really high more >>

  • Red Roses Wedding Bridal Bouqet

  • This is an elegant Bridal Bouqet in the Hand Tied Design created with Fresh Red Roses, The Charlotte Variety, and Hypericum Berries, they are such a rich red color and when shined with green glow have an awesome sheen to them. The Seeded Eucalypis adds wonderful rich green color and has the seeded berries that have an elegant draping effect to make the arrangment really flow and look lacy and rich at the same time. I also added accents of Bear Grass looped in to add some flair to the design of this Red Rose Bridal Bouquet and did a braided crisscross design on the hand tied stems with red Satin to finish it off.

  • Wedding Cake with Purple Fresh Flowers to Decorate it

  • Here is a Wedding Cake we decorated with the floral bouquet on Top and the clusters of flowers surrounding the base on the Table, this is done in Purples and Spring Bulb flowers, Hyacinths, Tulips, calla Lily, Statice, Sea Foam Statice, freesia, and touches of Greenery to give a nice base to the design on the table. The lavendar roses were open enough to really give a beautiful elegant gracing of the true rose. The Seafoam Statice gives a softer lacier effect than the traditional statice, it has a more fluffy look to it. See how elegant it can look with only the flowers gracing the top of the wedding cake and surrounding the base.
The Hyacinths and Freesia really give off some incredible sweet Fragrance too!

 Floral Designer

  • Real designers can make bows, with their own hands.

The hardest thing for me to learn was creating a bow of ribbon. I kid you not. My hands felt like they were contorted, mangled and flat out like they were made of stone. It took me a whole month to get the hang of it with out dropping loops and ending up with crippling hand cramps.

The trouble was definitely worth it though. I am amazed at how many shops and designers can't tie a bow by hand. You can instantly tell just by looking too.
We were always receiving requests to make bows for lots of things. Cars, wreaths and so on.
It has gotten to the point that you almost don't even look at what you are doing while you are making one and they still turn out great. Bows are such an integral part of being a florist too. We made hundreds of bows for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, proms. Whew.

The yards of ribbon have just a seemingly endless parade around the shop over the years. Miles of it. I wonder if we made it to the moon and back with all that we used over our 19 years of designing.

  • Choosing flowers for sympathy or loss

One of the hardest things you may go through in life is to lose someone near and dear to you
Whether due to a long full life and sometimes a quick unexpected tragic loss.
No matter what the circumstances have been,
as a florist we have been there and shed many tears along with our customers and friends during the heartbreaking time of loss,
This can be such a stressful and distressing time for families and friends.

One thing to keep in mind is that there is Never a Right or Wrong, you know what you want to do and send and some of the guidelines here I hope will help in your decisions.
If you are ordering a family piece, a casket spray for the casket you may want to use flowers that really permeate the personality of the one you have lost, To some the Roses have great meaning, Carnations are their favorite,

maybe Aunt Betty had a beautiful Pink Rose bush and the Pink roses remind you so much of her so you do a full beautiful open pink rose casket spray with sheer ribbons flowing, or maybe grandma had the most beautiful garden and you want all colors and styles of the vibrant flowers to remember her by, your grandfather loved the fall and cattails by the ponds, you could do a full array of fall tones and add cattails and other dried decor to accent the casket spray. You can custom design to your liking and personalize it however you want. Never be afraid to ask as each can be very unique depending on the individual.

You can add photos and props to really express hobbies or passionate things that the person loved doing in this life to make it personalized.

You can choose matching arrangements to go on either side of the casket to blend and tie in the casket piece. Even 2 large peace lily plants decorated to coordinate with the casket spray is very appropriate and looks rich and elegant.

I do recommend sending a Fresh Bouquet rather than a spray due to the fact that there is a large water base that can be refilled to retain the life of the flowers in the bouquets. The fresh sprays are made in a base that has a limited supply of water and will have a very short life once out of the cooler and when the water is absorbed into the stems.

If you are sending flowers to another town, a Plant is always a really safe choice as most plants tend to vary less than a Fresh Designed arrangement would from florist to florist.

Flowers mean so much to the family at the time of loss and it is amazing how it can touch the heart just knowing that you have people out there in the world that care enough to send you flowers or plants and other floral gifts. Flowers are the perfect expression when words are hard to find.

  • Valentines Day is Right around the corner and you will want to order early for the best selection, whether you want a simple single rose or a dozen roses, two dozen roses or send whatever your heart desires, the true fact is that the one you love will be touched just knowing you thought of them, Prices tend to be a little bit higher across the nation during Valentines Day, of course this wonderful Rose Oriented holiday comes after the most famed Parade of Roses, so that automatically puts roses in higher demand and growers and wholesalers really raise those prices on the local florists.

The best thing you can do is order what you can afford or what you like, The most popular Valentines Day Flower is the Rose just because of the Classic timelessness of the Rose. The most Popular color for us during the years has been the Classic Red Rose, We love the Charlotte Rose Variety due to the life of the rose, the way it really opens up to bloom and shows its full beauty without falling apart, we have had much luck with these through the years and had many of our customers comment on how long their roses lasted, still beautiful up to 2 weeks later and for a fresh flower bouquet that is awesome!

If you receive Roses as a gift for Valentines Day be sure you remember to add water daily and keep them in a cool area - away from Heater Vents for the longest life possible on your fresh flowers.

    Have a Wonderful Valentines Day!
